So THIS was a challenge!
I like to support new characters, young characters, and characters of color so I really wanted to include Jamie Reyes. But he wears a carapace. I had to get a little extra creative.
1. No fabric is going to have the toughness or the stiffness of a bug suit — and if it did, I don’t think I’d want to wear it. My solution is layers and texture. Build up. Leggings and the black textured top beneath the shorts, lace-and-stripes tee, and leg-warmers.
2. The backpack reflects the “shell” on his back; the beanie and glasses reflect his head covering. The earrings (which are darling) are, of course, blue beetles.
3. I’m a dancer and this look reflects that — I went with the ballet flats on purpose — and while Jamie doesn’t study dance (that I’m aware), there is a grace to superheroism. And as I’ve mentioned before, I love to play with contradictions. Transforming the hardshell into something a ballerina would wear out is precisely what I mean.
